Orientation Program for the Freshers


In order to inculcate the habit of visiting the library and consulting the books, a visit to the Library was organised for the PG students on 12th Aug.,2015.Mrs. Mohinder Kaur,the Chief Librarian provided information to the students regarding DELNET and N-List. The highlight of her discussion with the students was the method of decoding the classification number mentioned on the spine label.For instance, in the no. 821,8 stands for literature,2 for English and 1 for poetry. The students felt obliged towards their teachers Ms. Nisha and Ms. Manisha ,whose initiative had proved very helpful for the former.

Seminar on ‘ Are We Independent??!!’

On August 14,2015, the under-graduate Department of English organised a seminar on ‘Are We Independent??!!’. The purpose of this seminar was to create awareness among the students regarding their duties and responsibilities as citizens of independent nation. The speakers , starting with the background of India’s Freedom Struggle, presented their views on the role of women in pre and post independent India, physical and psychological aspect of being ‘Free’, indifference of present day youth towards their duties and responsibilities. The paper presentation was followed by the discussion. The students shared their views on the meaning of the word ‘Independent’ and what it means to them. Celebrating the 69th Independence Day, this seminar was a humble attempt to inculcate the sense of patriotism among the students and to enlighten them of their role as the free and responsible citizens of India.

 Workshop on Communication and its Barriers
A workshop was organised by the department of English on the topic – Communication and its Barriers for Bsc IInd year on 17th August,2015 under the guidance of Mrs. Suneha Chaudhary and Miss Monika Kashyap. Miss Monika while introducing the topic, elaborated the meaning of communication and the process of communication. A communication process model was illustrated to students with the help of diagram on the blackboard. Students showed their keen interest in the workshop and asked a number of questions. The workshop was summed up by Mrs. Suneha Chaudhary who explained the types of barriers to communication and also the ways to overcome these barriers. This workshop proved to be very beneficial to students in dealing their concerned project on the same topic.

Talk on ‘Criticism and Creativity’

The PG Deptt. of Eng. organised a talk on 'Criticism vs. Creativity' in which the students expressed their enthusiastic desire to go beyond the prescribed critical texts..They took examples from their familiar critics and quoted from their texts. The novelty about the discussion was that it focussed on the final aspect of Creative and Critical works of art, something always ignored in literary discussions.The talk was an enduring and enriching experience for the students.

Seminar on Craze for Money

To throw light on the burning issue of the hour, a seminar was organised by the Department of English on the topic ‘Craze for Money.’ Money has bound the humanity in the shackles of hatred and jealousy. All are becoming butchers and crossing the limits of the brutal state of nature.The students of B.AII enthusiastically participated in it and shared their views. All of them were very vocal and expressive in their viewpoints, as the issue is related to one and all. The seminar concluded on a positive note that money should not be considered as the be all and the end all of one’s life and that we ,the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve, should not become slaves to money, rather we should be its master.

A Seminar on the topic ‘English Vinglish’

A Seminar was organised by the Department of English on the topic ‘English Vinglish’ on 27th of August,2015 under the supervision of Mrs. Karandeep Kaur and Mrs. Suneha Chaudhary. The students of B.A Ist year took part in this seminar with great zeal. The students from section ‘D’ named Rupinder Kaur, Sneha Singh, Daisy Setia and Aishwarya, Sonali, Priyanka and Harman from section ‘E’; presented their papers and discussed the ‘Use of English with grammatical rules and without grammatical rules.’ They also discussed the proper pronunciation of words and also that even two natives of a same dialect cannot speak alike.

The seminar was summed up by the teachers who encouraged the students  to converse in English during their English period. They also discussed the issue that even the two natives of England do not pronounce the same words alike.

  Celebration of Teachers’ Day
  
Teachers’ Day was celebrated on the 5th of September, 2015 on the birth anniversary of Dr. Radhakrishnan who believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”. The students expressed their gratitude to the teachers for making them good human beings and responsible citizens of tomorrow. Ms. Sandeep appreciated and praised the teachers for being true mentors and role models.

Seminar on Literary Significance of the Preface

A seminar on the “Literary Significance of The Preface” was organised by the Department of English on September 8,2015 to focus on the fact that Wordsworth’s  The Preface is a landmark in the history of literary criticism as it serves as a dividing line between two schools of criticism- Romanticism and Classicism. Ms. Monika introduced the topic and the three speakers , Ms. Nishu, Ms. Amandeep and Ms. Mandeep came forward with their views. Then there was a classroom discussion in which Mrs. Anand , Mrs. Nisha and Mrs. Manisha, too ,participated. The students actively participated in the activity as they had come quite prepared for the discussion. The seminar raised the  confidence level of the participants and added to the knowledge of the students by acquainting them with the unique contribution of Wordsworth to English Literary Criticism. It, in fact ,proved to be a very beneficial activity for the students of literature.

An Extempore Speech Competition

An inter-class Extempore Speech Competition was organised by the English Department under the guidance of Mrs. Suneha Chaudhary and Ms. Navneet kaur for the students of B.A IInd year on 9th September,2015. The program was wholly student- centric. Each participant was given five minutes to speak on any random topic chosen by her through multiple slips. The aim of conducting such a program was to let the students express their views on any random topic in fluent  English which could increase their confidence too. The participants were thoroughly confident in expressing their view which let the program come to its fruition.

Seminar on the topic "Moral Values" was organised under the guidance of Ms. Navneet and Ms. Karandeep Kaur. It was discussed that moral values are very important for leading an upright life. The qualities like honesty, compassion, courage ,modesty,forgiveness were discussed . The point was that they benefit a person throughout his life.

Female Foeticide


Discussion was held on the topic 'Female Foeticide' which is a burning topic. Many programs have been started by government through awareness camps, programs like 'Nanhi Cha' etc.It is the duty of educational institutions to hold discussions ,debates and seminars etc. Dev Samaj College for Women is very active in promoting such programs. It is necessary to make the girls aware so that they can also contribute in abolishing such abuses. Students of B.A III participated very energetically and came up with so many views and ideas which will definitely help the society to eradicate such abuses.

Social Media- A Passion and Craze Amongst Youngsters

A class seminar on the topic ''Social Media- A Passion and Craze Amongst Youngsters'' was organised by Mrs. Karandeep Kaur and Miss. Monika Kashyap in Bsc IInd year on 16th of Feb 2016. The students presented their views on the occasion and elaborated their views on the role of Social Networking sites in the daily lives of youngsters. The seminar was summed up by the teachers who emphasized on the point that social networking sites need to be used in a wise way and should not be misused. Their use is helpful and beneficial as long as it's use is accessed in a right way.

Poster Making Competition: Drugs- Evil and Prevention

The Department of English organised a competition in poster making and asked the students to make posters on the subject ''Drugs- Evil and Prevention''. In all 27 students participated in this competition. They were awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize on the basis of the relevance and depiction of the topic. They displayed their posters in the campus. The students also briefed the spectators about what they had depicted in the posters.

An English movie based on the novel by John Osborne "Look Back In Anger" was shown to the students of PG Deptt. of English in collaboration with the functional Eng. Deptt.It helped the students to understand the content and characters of "The Lost generation" in a better way.

A Discussion on Girish Karnad's play 'Tughlaq'

A discussion on Girish Karnad's play 'Tughlaq' as a historical play was held on 2nd March 2016 by the students of M.A II English in the presence of Mrs. Nisha, Mrs. Manisha and Ms. Ankita. The students discussed how the plot of Tughlaq is based on history. The central character Muhammad Tughlaq is a well known historical figure. The action covers a span of five years. It begins in Delhi and then shifts to the road of Daultabad. A number of characters who surround Tughlaq are historical but the characters like Aziz and Aazam are dramatists' own creation. Ms. Seema and Ms. Amritpreet pointed out to certain deviations from historical facts. Mrs. Manisha and Ms. Ankita concluded the discussion with remarks that there is a curious mixture of fact and fiction in the play Tughlaq. As a dramatist, Karnad succeeds in blending history with modern politics and Tughlaq is remarkable in this respect that it may be regarded as a political allegory.

Quiz on Modernism 


A quiz competition on the topic 'Modernism' was held by the Department of English. The quiz was conducted by Ms. Anupriya Khera  for the BA III honors students. The topic 'Modernism 'was chosen to help them prepare other 'isms' covered in the Twentieth century. The questions related to Modernist poets and Modernist writers were put across to teams 'A' and team 'B'. The quiz was quite informative for the students . It helped them know the background of the literary texts in their course.

A Visit to village Nathuwala 

A visit to village Nathuwala was organised by the Department of English in connection with the Adult Literacy Program.It was an attempt to perform social responsibility towards the rural and poor sections of society and also to promote community development. Mrs. Suneha, Mrs.Karandeep Kaur, Ms. Vanshika and Ms.Monika  of the Department visited the village and met its Sarpanch, Sardar Lakhveer Singh. The teachers got the information about the residents of the village who were mostly illiterate and belonged to the weaker sections of society. The teachers taught the adults of the village how to put their signature. Notebooks and pens were also distributed to the members of the village. The village Sarpanch and the members of the village appreciated the efforts of the teachers.

Seminar on 'Effective Communication'

The Post Graduate Department of English endeavors to chisel the communication skills of its students with an objective that they can effectively meet the demands of the present day scenario. With a view to provide tips for Effective Communication, a seminar was organised on March 9,2016. Mr. Miraj Chauhan who was the key speaker explained to the students through effective PPTs the various methods of communication and its barriers. The introduction to the seminar was given by Mr. Shiv Sethi , Head , Department of Functional English and a thanks note was given by Mrs.Nisha Kumra ,Head, Department of English.

'Existentialism in Waiting for Godot '

A seminar on 'Existentialism in Waiting for Godot ' was organised for the students of MA 1st year. It was  emphasized that Waiting for Godot had all the elements of existentialism. It was pointed out that Vladimir and Estragon are two tramps who are facing the problem of their existence in this world .Mrs. Nisha summed up by bringing forth the theme of the play that an individual must continue with his actions rather than sitting and waiting for God.

Screening of a Documentary 'He Named Me Malala'


A Documentary named ' He Named Me Malala'  was shown to the teachers and the students of the college on April 2nd, 2016.The initiative was taken up by Ms.Anupriya and Ms. Ankita Manuja of the Department of English. 'He Named Me Malala' is a 2015 American documentary based on the life of a young  Pakistani female activist Malala Yousafzai who spoke for the rights of girls especially the Right to Education.
