Quiz Competition The Mind Fizz
The Post Graduate Department of English, under the able guidance of Principal Dr. Ramnita Saini Sharda, organised an online literary quiz competition THE MIND FIZZ on 7th December,2020. The chief motive of this event was to ignite a literary spark among its participants and inculcate linguistic skills as well. In order to gauge their literary and linguistic knowledge, total fifty questions were framed in the form of MCQs each carrying two marks. Apart from the participation of our own institution in the event, the students as well as faculty members from other institutions named Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46C Chandigarh, Rabindra Bharti University, Khalsa College Amritsar, Dev Samaj College of Education,Sector 36, Chandigarh, RSD College Ferozepur, Guru Nanak College Ferozepur, Mukand Lal National College, Yamuna Nagar also showed their enthusiasm for the event by participating in it. The students acquiring more than 70% marks were given e-certificates to reward their accomplishment. The event was a great success as it achieved its objective.
Guest Lecture on "Why Study Literature and How to Approcah It"
Series of Group Presentations
The English Literary society 'The Memoir' organized a series of group presentations under the supervision of Ms.Rupinderjit Kaur, Assistant Professor in English from 14 December, 2020 to 9th January 2021. In this academic activity the students of Bsc.IInd (Non Medical, Medical & Computer Science) were divided into fourteen different groups. Each group consisted of five students taken from three streams; Non Medical, Medical and Computer Science. The topics were allotted to them which were based on their current syllabus of the session. The participants made individual PPTs for their particular groups and then divided the sub topics of the main topic among them. Apart from discussing the particular topic in the academic form, the students were also directed to find out the relevance of their topics with the present scenario. The same was directed to make the students understand the relation of the academic subjects with real life. At the end of each group presentation, the students used to ask the questions for the group members and their queries were satisfied as well. The supervisor also asked the questions to evaluate the performance of each group. The students were also directed to share the report of their group presentation and the PPTs daily. The chief motive of this activity was to inculcate the good communication skills and enhance their critical abilities among the students which was duly achieved.
Five Day Workshop
The Post Graduate Department of English organized a five day workshop for the students of M.A.II (English) from 17 to 21 November 2020. The main objective of the workshop was to equip the students with set of skills and potentiality to undertake the research very effectively. The agenda of this workshop was designed in an organized manner so that all the necessary stages for research work can be covered efficiently. Total five speakers who were efficient in the field of research were invited for the workshop.
Dr. Bhumida Sharma, Assistant Professor in English inaugurated the workshop by delivering an introductory lecture on research. She started her lecture with the definition of research and its significance in the field of English literature. She made the students familiar with the research tools and certain stages of research to pursue with their dissertation. She highlighted that research methodology means specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select, process, and analyze information about a topic. She further elaborated that the methodology section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability. After giving an overview of the research process she informed the students about the criteria for selecting and formulating a research problem. She suggested to the students that their research problem should be relevant, useful, novel and ethically accepted.
Ms. Sapna Badhwar, Assistant Professor in English at DSCW, FZR started her discussion on review of literature and its significance in the research field. The purpose of a literature review is to identify inconsistencies: gaps in research, conflicts in previous studies, open questions left from other research. She further elaborated that like any other academic text, the literature review should also have an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. The students were also guided that if they are writing the literature review as part of their dissertation or thesis, the central problem or research question should be reiterated. She further talked about the need for deliberation on the sampling process and also discussed the conceptual facts related to sampling techniques and its qualification into probability and non probability.
The third day of the workshop started with clearing certain basic concepts and techniques involved in data analysis, classification and interpretation of data. In continuation to that briefing was done on descriptive statistics with summary calculation. In her technical session,Ms. Anju Rajput also shed light on the research design which allows researchers to hone in on research methods that are suitable for the subject matter and set their studies up for success. She informed the students about two major categories of research design i.e. Qualitative research design & Quantitative research design. Qualitative research determines relationships between collected data and observations based on mathematical calculation. Quantitative research is for cases where statistical conclusions to collect actionable insights are essential.
The fourth day of the workshop was handled by Ms. Pooja Garag on citation and referencing. The speaker began with a technical aspect of writing citations and references that every researcher needs to know. She clearly conveyed to the students how to write the format that must be followed in citing a book, journal, article, websites, case studies,reports, international and national documents and periodicals, single author to many authors through MLA style.
Ms.Kanika Vithani started with the session by giving a comprehensive view about Research hypothesis,types,criteria, characteristics of hypothesis testing. Every student was given an appointment to frame a null and alternative hypothesis based on the problem chosen on the spot and deliberate the hypothesis with proper understanding.
The five day workshop ended with the vote of thanks given by Dr. Bhumida Sharama, H.O.D of English. She reiterated that the imperative of organizing this workshop lies in improving the overall quality of research works of the participants.
Online Quiz Competition
The Postgraduate Department of English organised an Online Quiz Competition for the students of BCA 1 English on 25th February ,2021. In this competition, the whole class was divided into 4 teams.Every team was assigned a leader. Team A was led by Muskan Sehgal ,team B by Harmeet Kaur , team C by Aman andteam D had Raman as its leaders. The scoreboard was maintained by Muskan Gakhar. Every team had to answer 15 questions.The competition was won by Team C .But the performance of all the teams was excellent.It was an exciting,learning and motivating experience for the students who were filled with a zeal to answer all the questions confidently.
Story Writing Competition
Under the patronage of the honourable Chairman, Sh. Nirmal Singh Dhillon and Principal Dr. Ramnita Sharda, English Literary Society ‘The Memoir’ under Postgraduate Department of English organised a Story Writing Competition. This competition was organised to explore the infinite layers of students' minds and ignite the world with their ingenious thoughts. Students from various institutions participated in this competition.
Faculty Development Programme Research Methodology
Research fosters our critical thinking and analytical skills through hands-on learning. To connect us with sources of information and networks of professional support, the Postgraduate Department of English ,under the stewardship of honourable Chairman S. Nirmal Singh ji Dhillon and our revered Principal Dr. Ramnita Saini Sharda is organising a Faculty Development Programme from 26th April to 30th April, 2021. The objective of this FDP is to enlighten the interested teachers and scholars regarding the intricate paths of research viz. how to select the topic that interests you and how to navigate your thoughts in the direction of that topic and finally reach the desired destination.
