REPORT ON TREE PLANTATION


In order to restore eco-balance which has become the dire need of the hour, PG Department of English,Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur organized Plantation Drive in different corners of the college on 23.07.2018. The drive was organized quite meticulously under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. (Mrs.)Madhu Prashar and Dean, College Development Er. Parteek Prashar. Senior faculty members of the department Ms. Nisha Kumra and Ms. Sapna Badhwar selected the empty spaces to plant saplings of different varieties. The students of the department were highly enthusiastic to plant more and more saplings. They actively planted the saplings and watered them. On this occasion, madam Principal, staff members and the students took an oath that they would work whole heartedly for saving the planet from the negative effects of Global Warming and would plant more and more trees to make the life of the coming generations worth living. Madam Principal addressed the students and appealed to them to ensure that the saplings they had planted should be adopted by them so that they could have 100% survival rate .The students ensured her that their contribution towards keeping their planet clean and green would be eternal.









SHOW CASING OF MOVIE “THE MIRACLE WORKER”


The Post Graduate Department of English showcased the movie "The Miracle Worker" based on Helen Keller`s autobiography "The Story of My Life" to the students of BA III. The main attraction of the movie was its focus on the struggle of a teacher and his importance in a student`s life.

Mr. Puneet gave a vivid introduction of the movie to the students and highlighted few instances to be viewed categorically.Mrs.Manisha Sethi (H.O.D),Mrs. Nisha kumra,Mrs. Bhumida, Mrs. Anju Rajput and Mr. Deepak also graced the showcasing

The movie left the students with the message "if one wishes to achieve something, one can do it with one's persistent efforts and willingness to do it." Besides fulfilling the didactic purpose, the movie proved to be a great source of joy and entertainment for the students.









Challenges in Banking Transactions and their Solutions”
(Under Students’ Enrichment Programme)

DSCW, Ferozepur always aims at bringing a holistic approach to education. Throughout the year different departments of the college organize different activities, seminars, workshops etc. to offer opportunities to enrich the experiences of the students and help them grow as informed citizens who have the access to well rounded education. Accordingly, on 4th Aug.2018, PG Department of English, under Students’ Enrichment Programme organized One Day Workshop on “Challenges in Banking Transactions and their Solutions” in collaboration with PG Department of Commerce. The Speaker of the day was Ms. Roopkamal, Asstt. Prof. in Commerce who dealt with the topic in a very systematic and organized manner. With the help of PPTs and Bank Vouchers of various banks, she informed the students as to how they can open their bank account, how they can make online and off-line transactions, what precautions they have to take while making their transactions, how to use their ATMs, Credit and Debit Cards etc.. Her Lecture was quite engrossing and informative. The students felt thankful to her for giving them the solutions to so many bank related problems. On this occasion, the faculty members of Commerce and English Department were present.






Ice Breaking and Career Counseling Session

Keeping in mind the fact that career decisions play a pivotal role in shaping the future growth and development of students, the PG Department of English of DSCW, Ferozepur organized ice-breaking and career counseling session for the benefit of the students of BAI on 4th August, 2018 in the college auditorium.

In the current scenario when the market is flooded with multiple options, getting the right guidance about choices available helps students in their decision-making process. Accordingly, the session aimed at making the students aware of the multiple career options available in the college. It was intended to help our students in making informed decisions. The session commenced with the Principal Mam Dr. (Mrs.) Madhu Prashar reiterating the importance of knowing one’s potential and subject of interest before making a decision. She also laid stress on the right combination of subjects as per one’s aptitude which should be reflected in their academic performance. She also shared information with the students regarding various courses available in the college which are designed as per the demand of the present times. She guided the students not to make decisions based on family expectations and peer pressure only. She directed the students to identify their interests and find out what their strengths are .She shared with the students the information regarding B. Voc. courses available in the college which can help them in getting a job with handsome pay package at a very early stage. She encouraged the students to come out with their doubts if they had any. On this occasion, the faculty members of the department were also present. On the whole, the session was informative and enriching for students.










Celebration of Independence Day

72nd Independence Day of India was celebrated with a sense of gratitude by the PG Department of English of Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur City. On this occasion, T Shirt Painting Competition was organized on 13.8.2018.The theme of this Competition was related to Independence Day. The purpose behind this was to remind our young generation about the sacrifices made by our great freedom fighters and to inculcate in them a spirit of sacrifice. The students took pledge to bring glory to their motherland by following the path shown by our national heroes. The students painted the tricolor on the T Shirts and wrote different slogans on them. They painted both the front and the back side of these T Shirts. Their effort was highly appreciated by Madam Principal and the faculty members of the department-Ms. Nisha , Ms.Manisha and Ms. Sapna who had organized this event.

The next day i.e. on 14.8.2018, a cycle rally was organized by the department. The students wore the T shirts which they themselves had painted on 13.8.2018. There were the slogans attracting the attention of the on-lookers regarding the various evils of society viz. female foeticide, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Stop dowry, Say No To Drugs, etc. Madam Principal took the lead in this rally followed by the faculty members of the department-Ms. Nisha , Ms.Manisha and Ms. Sapna. The students passed through the main bazaars of the city and spread the message to make free India not only better but the best country in the world.





SEMINAR ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

The Department of English organized a seminar to commemorate Independence Day on Aug. 18, 2018 on the topic ‘Proud to be Indian’. The seminar was organized keeping in mind the present scenario of youth’s increasing craze for going abroad and their doubts of if there is anything to feel proud of being an Indian. The purpose of the seminar was to make the students aware of and to share the common feeling of Patriotism with them. A dire need was felt to inculcate among them the sense of Pride we all have as Indians.

The students presented their views in the form of poems and articles. The presentations were followed by discussion. The students felt and understood that in today’s Independent India, they all have to fight for a different kind of freedom: from Ignorance, Impurity both inner and outer and above all Negativity. The seminar concluded with the students taking pledge of bringing a wave of happiness and positivity in our country.







Showcasing of the Movie “Arms and the Man”

The Post Graduate Department of English showcased the movie "Arms and the Man" based on G.B. Shaw`s play " Arms and the Man " to the students of BA III (Honors), MA I (Eng) and MA II (Eng) on August 21, 2018. Mr. Puneet gave a brief introduction to G.B. Shaw and his play "Arms and the Man ".

The main purpose behind the showcasing was to spark the students’ interest in English literature and motivate learning. At the same time, the students were provided with first hand experience of how native speakers converse and use English by using natural facial expressions. Mrs Anju Rajput concluded with summing up the theme “ Romanticism of War” relating it to Idealism and Realism in a few words.

Mrs. Manisha Sethi (H.O.D), Mrs. Nisha kumra, Mrs. Bhumida, Mrs. Sapna, Ms. Rupinder Kaur and Mr. Deepak also graced the showcasing. The movie proved to be successful in fulfilling its main motive i.e. to make the students understand the play with visual effects and create interest for English literature.







VISIT TO BOTANY LAB

(UNDER STUDENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME)

On 23rd August, 2018, the students of English Department paid a visit to Botany Department under the student enrichment programme. The purpose of these programmes is to bring the students out of the comfort zone of their chosen field and widen the horizon of their knowledge and give them a peep into the world of other streams as well. The students were headed by their senior teachers Mrs. Manisha, Mrs. Nisha, Mrs. Sapna and Mrs. Bhumida. The students of Botany Department had prepared posters which were not only full of information for the students of Arts Stream but were also aesthetically a delight for the eyes. The Botany students had classified themselves into various groups and their posters were based on the information about the nutritional factors of various spices that are available in our kitchen. The students threw light on the medicinal value of Harad, Haldi(Turmeric), Methi(Fenugreek), Alovera, Neem, Lemon, Trifla etc. They also informed our students as to what could be the treatments available at our homes for the problems like Typhoid, Stomach problems, Skin problems, Constipation, Inflammation, Infections, Diabetes, Pneumonia, Malaria etc. and what are the things that help in fighting against strengthening bones, improving eyesight, removing tanning, strengthening hair, replenishing skin etc. The students of English Department made so many queries and the Botany students answered them satisfactorily




REPORT ON ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME

On 28th August, 2018, the students of B.A III of English Department paid a visit to the village, Malwal Qadim along with their teacher Mrs. Sapna Badhwar. This visit was designed to promote Literacy among the adult women of the village Malwal. Around 25 women of the village were identified by one of our students Veerpal Kaur. These women were requested to gather in the local Gurudwara. These women had never made any effort to be literate. Our students had taken books, notebooks, pencils, erasers etc. for these ladies. First they distributed these articles among the women and then the students divided themselves into various groups and they started teaching these new students of theirs who were older to them but had the enthusiasm to learn something new. The students used innovative techniques to teach ‘their students’. The response of the ladies was really very heartening. They learnt so many things in a brief span of time. Our students told them that it would not be a single day affair rather they would make it a point to stay in touch with their pupils more occasionally. They exchanged their telephone nos.with the ladies so that they could contact them whenever they felt the need. It was a very fruitful day to be amongst the women from the age groups of 30 to 75.

After this, our students paid a visit to Government Elementary School of Malwal Qadim and spoke about the harmful effects of drugs. They implored the young ones of the school to channelize their energies in a positive manner and help the society in becoming the drug free society. They donated a wall clock to the principal of the school. This clock was symbolic for the students of the school to have value of time. On the whole it was a great day.






Seminar on “Research”

The Post Graduate Department of English conducted a seminar on 4th September on the topic “Research” to inculcate research temperament / attitude among the students belonging to various streams and classes such as MA II (Eng), MA I (Eng), MA II (Punjabi), MA I (Punjabi), and BA III (Honors). Mr. Deepak (Asssistant Professor in English) gave a detailed and energetic lecture on “Research” where all the students showed great enthusiasm and interest in understanding the basic tenets of research. It was followed by a sound discussion taking into account the current issues like selection of the topic, plagiarism, research ethics, MLA style, documentation, in text citation etc.

On the occasion, Mrs. Manisha Sethi (H.O.D), Mrs. Nisha kumra, Dr. Bhumida Sharma, and Mr. Puneet added feather to the cap by their gracious presence. The seminar proved to be a stepping stone in guiding the students to undertake the research objectively, systematically and purposefully. Thus, successful in achieving all its objectives, the seminar was summed up with a motivational message.




Teachers' Day Celebration

Teachers'Day was celebrated by the students of the Department of English on September 5,2018 in the college Auditorium. Madam Principal Dr(Mrs)MadhuPrashar was the chief guest.Students expressed that dedicated teachers are the pride of every institution. So to appreciate their efforts, to thank them and to make them feel special the students of DSCW organised this event which commenced at 12 o'clock in the afternoon with a welcome speech by Ms Vinti and Ms Veerpal of BA final.Mr Puneet,Assistant Professor in English recited a beautiful poem. Fun and frolic started with a Paper Dance for the Teachers followed by the' titles' given to the teachers by the students. Ms Navdeep, MsVeerpal, Ms Vinti and Ms Parmeet conducted all this with dignity. Game of Sit-Stand, cake-cutting ceremony, dance performance and a musical video were the other highlights of the day. Madam Principal showered her blessings on this occasion. This event ended but the students felt that it left a deep impression on their hearts strengthening the teacher-student bond with all the love, respect and learning.



DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS OF POETRY OF AGHASHAHID

A paper presentation seminar was organized by the English department on the poetry of Kashmiri American poet Agha Shahid Ali prescribed in the syllabus for the paper INDIAN WRITING IN ENGLISH on 14 September 2018. All the students of M.A 2nd year presented their papers on the different poems of Agha Shahid Ali. The diasporic elements, the theme of exile and the poet's pangs about the plight of Kashmir were discussed by the students. The objective of this presentation was to analyze the multiple dimensions of the poetry of Agha Shahid Ali and enhance the demonstrative and communicative skills among all the students. The intentional objective was achieved by all the participants.









































SEMINAR ON RAMANUJAM ‘S POETRY

A seminar on various themes in the poetry of A.K.Ramanujan was organised by the Department of English for the students of M.A ll on September 18, 2018.A.K. Ramanujan, one of the major Indian poets writing in English, considered as the voice of modern India,shows his deep roots in Indian tradition and culture. His poetry is a depiction of human sentiments, feelings,and emotions without any gloss of sophistication The students of M.A ll ,Ms.Gagan ,Ms. Shefali and Ms. Kashish spoke on the varied themes prevailing in the poetry of Ramanujan. They emphasised how Family is the central theme in his poetry by giving the examples of the poems Love Poem for Wife l and Small Scale Reflections on a Great House .Ramanujan's poetry is characterized by psychological realism and we can also see the face of Indian tradition and the changes which have taken place in the structure of Indian society. Hindu Heritage is also given importance in his poetry and historical sensibility is also evident in his poems. Some poems are remarkable for the treatment of love .Ms Gagan concluded by pointing out that in presenting the various themes Ramanujan shows his excellent grasp over the use of images.The seminar was helpful to the students in understanding the variety of themes prevalent in the poetry of A.K. Ramanujan.





















DISCUSSION ON VARIED THEMES OF IMTIAZ DHARKAR’S POETRY

A discussion was held by the students of the Post Graduate Department of English on Imtiaz Dharker’s Poetry on 17th September 2018. The students of MA discussed their points on the topic “ Poetry of struggle between traditional structures and raised feminist consciousness of women today”. Imtiaz Dharker’s poetry always raised issues of women in modern society through her poetry. She always focussed on the real position of women in the society. She reiterated the point that the power of her feminity is considered as her Achilles heel by male chauvinist society. The students enthusiastically participated in the discussion and shared their views and portray the real picture of the society. They quoted the examples from mythology and discussed how from ancient times women were treated and till today their position. The speakers emphatically put their points and show the present situation from all parts of the society. The speakers Ms. Riya, Ms. Kashish and Ms. Priyanka shared their views on the topic and Ms. Priyanka sum-up the session by dedicating a poem“FEMINISM” to all women.



WORKSHOP ON DETERMINERS

A workshop on Determiners was conducted by the Department of English on September20, 2018 for the students of B.A 1. The aim of this workshop was to make thestudents learn how determiners are important for proper sentence structure and comprehension. The students were introduced to the topic a day before by explaining how determiners preceed a noun.So they participated with great zeal and came forward enthusiastically to write different forms of determiners on the black board-articles,demonstratives possessives,quantitatives etc. They learnt that the function of determiners is to express proximity ,relationship ,quantity,number and definiteness and they play important role in English grammar.



















HOW TO BE CONFIDENT WITHOUT ARROGANCE
(STUDENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAM)

ON 17th OCTOBER-2018,the Department of English in collaboration with Department of Computer Science organized a Workshop on Personality Development to highlight the importance of confidence during attending interviews or any social meetings without being arrogant. Mrs. Anju Rajput Asst.Prof.in English,elaborated on how to carry oneself in various social set-up with giving practical inputs .She made the students to demonstrate the Mock Interview to make the students understand the difference between Arrogance and Humility. The students as well as teachers very enthusiastically,took part in the live discourse .Many students cleared their queries relating to “Deportment”.The way to walk ,to talk and to carry oneself in the society.The workshop was very informative and full of substance for the students as well as teachers.













READER RESPONSE THEORY

The Post Graduate department of English organized an extensive lecture on“Reader Response: The Search for Meaning” through Power Point Presentation for the students of M.A. II on 24 Oct. 2018. Mr. Deepak Prasad Verma (Assistant Professor in English) presented the topic very elaborately where the quest of true meaning of any literary text is discussed among the students along with the role and nature of the author,text and the reader. The discussion further reinforced the assertion that the meaning is the sum total of the interaction of the text and the reader. The Students very actively listened to the topic, participated in the discussion, and came up with many examples of their own. The lecture-cum-discussion mode of the topic presentation was concluded with the nexus that all literary text can have more than one meaning or interpretation as literature is examined from many different angles and viewpoints. Thus, the topic ended with the attainment of its desired objective i.e. the students’ complete understanding of the Reader Response Theory.









 PAPER PRESENTATION SEMINAR
                                                          (RAPE OF THE LOCK)
A paper presentation seminar was organized by Rupinderjit Kaur , Assistant Professor in English on THE RAPE OF THE LOCK AS A MOCK HEROIC EPIC on 30 October , 2018. The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the features and objectives of this genre used by the British poet Alexander Pope in his narrative poem THE RAPE OF THE LOCK. The students of M.A. 1st year participated in this seminar by presenting their papers on the above mentioned topic. The main features of mock heroic epic genre i.e. the use of supernatural machinery, the use of heightened and elevated style, the use of invocation, battles and epic similes were discussed by the participants. The students also critically analyzed the character of Belinda, the main heroine of the poem. The superficiality of the 18th century society was also discussed by the students. Pope’s desired objective to mock the original subject in grandiose manner in this poem was analyzed by the students. The seminar enhanced the demonstrative and analytical abilities of the students. The intended objective of the seminar was achieved and the activity proved to be a success.

















PAPER PRESENTATION(THE DECONSTRUCTIVE ANGEL)

A Paper- Presentation was organised by the Post Graduate Department of English on the
topic “ The Deconstructive Angel” on 31st October, 2018. The session was started by
Mrs. Anu Priya by giving the glimpses of M.H.Abrahms. She discussed about the life
and various writings of the great critic. After the introductory session , the first paper was
presented by Ms. Sonam in which she discussed about the introduction of the essay and
how M.H.Abrahms conveyed his basic ideas through dialogues. The next speaker
Ms. Jashanjot Kaur presented her paper on the first and second part of the deconstructive
angel in which she presented her points on various terms in the essay. The third and the last
part was presented by Ms. Shifali . She discussed all the points related to the section and also
discussed the previous sections. The session was concluded by Mrs. Anu Priya in which she
guided the students on how to present the paper and what points should be taken into
consideration while presenting the paper.





















ALLEGORICAL INTERPRETATION OF “THE SELFISH GIANT”

In order to Interpret “The Selfish Giant as an Allegory”, a workshop cum-discussion
was organized for the students of B.sc (Medical, Non-medical, Computer Science)
on November 01, 2018. Under the guidance of Rupinderjit Kaur from the Department
of English, the students of the concerned classes came forward to discuss various
elements of allegory i.e. symbolism, animal kingdom as characters and the use
of personification in the story ‘The Selfish Giant’. The workshop was commenced by
Harmanpreet Kaur (B.Sc II), who shared her views on the different symbols used in
the story; Sophia (B.Sc II) presented her views on the use of animal characterization
in ‘The Selfish Giant’ and Renu from B.sc (Computer Science) summed up the event
with her comments on allegorical analysis of the story. The desired objective of
this event was duly achieved.



























WORKSHOP ON GRAMMAR GIMMICKS

A workshop on Non finites was conducted by the Department of English for
the students of BA ll. The main purpose was to make the students understand
how the verbals allow the writing to move from sentence to sentence in an
effortless way.The three types of Non finite verbs were explained-(1) Infinitives
(2) Gerunds(3) Participles . The students were taught about the two kinds
of infinitives- the bare infinitive and the full Infinitive. The difference between
Gerunds and Participles was also explained. The students learnt that Gerunds
are actually modifications of the verbs as a noun .Participles are the modifications
of the verbs as an adjective.They comprehended how reading becomes more interesting
with verbals and how infinitives,gerunds and participles can make one write with
fascinating sentences in an interesting way.








WORKSHOP ON BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

The Post Graduate Department of English, Dev Samaj College for Women,
Ferozepur City organized a workshop on “Business Communication” for the students
of B.Sc. II on 5 Nov. 2018. Mr. Deepak (Assistant Professor in English) discussed
in detail the various means of business communication such as E-mail, Letter, Auction
Notice, Public Notice, Tender Notice, PPT, Video Conferencing etc. along with their
different formats. The students were given the exposure to various types and uses of
business communication. The students actively participated in the workshop, quenched
their queries, and discussed the various possibilities of the future forms of business
communication. The speaker also asked questions to the students related to their personal
as well as formal means of communications and finally concluded the workshop with
positive feedback. The students enjoyed being the part of the workshop and also learned
the role and importance of various means of business communication in daily life.









 CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF GIRL CHILD

The English Department in collaboration with Central Association(C.A) of Dev Samaj College For Women , Ferozpur City, organized a visit on January 22, 2019 to celebrate the birth of girl child in the nearby localities of Ferozpur by cutting cakes in the homes of mothers who have given birth to girl child. Along with the cutting of cakes,the tree sapling on the name of newly born baby girls were also planted to mark the birth of girl child . All these activities were conducted to eradicate the discrimation existing in the society about the birth of girl child and to make them feel blessed.
Dr. Bhumida Sharma and Ms. Rupinder Kaur from the Department of English took part in the visit. This visit encouraged the people to erase the discrimation that girls are facing in the Indian context. This inspiring visit made the parents of the girl children aware about the equal value of the girl child. This event ended with an inspirational note and the objective of the vision was duly achieved.





















 AWARENESS RALLY ON “BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO”

In an endeavour to improve sex ratio in the state of Punjab, the  Department of English under the patronage of honorable Principal Dr. (Mrs) Madhu Prashar organized ” BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO” rally on 23rd January,2019. The main purpose behind this rally was to make people aware about the emancipation of women in society. At the begining of the rally, Dr. Mrs. Madhu Prashar along with the faculty members of English department, yelled the slogan to encourage the participants. The rally aimed at  promoting  awareness about the importance of girl education and highlighting the inequalities faced by girls in the country.
Dr. Bhumida Sharma, Mrs. Anju Rajput, Mrs. Anupriya and Rupinderjit Kaur, from the  Department of English also participated actively.The students form various classes took part in the rally. The participants raised slogans like”SAVE THE GIRL CHILD” and also displayed placards. The rally commenced from Dev Samaj College For Women, Ferozpur City and covered all the important areas of the city. The declining sex ratio has become a great issue of concern and hence, the rally was organised to raise awarness in this regard. Giving shape to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the English Department plannned the acitivity to carry forward the message of saving the girl child. The objective of this activity was duly achieved and this rally proved to be a success.

Dev Samaj college for women ferozepur city celebrates 'Maat Pita Santaan Diwas' every year with great zeal and  provides platform to the students to pay tribute to their . It is a golden opportunity for the students to show their love, affection and gratitude to their enthusiasm. The occasion also provides platform to the students to pay tribute to their parents, who sacrificed many things in their life and dedicated their time nurturing them.
The Post Graduate Department of English celebrated' Maat Pita Santaan Diwas' on January 24,2019. Mr. Puneet kumar, Assistant Prof. in English began the celebrations by reciting a poem on the role and importance of parents in one's life.To make the day colourful and express their gratitude towards their parents, the students of B.VOC.I presented Bhajans, delivered speeches and recited poems in which they confessed their past mistakes, negligence and omissions towards their duties. Mrs. Manisha Sethi(H.O.D), Mrs. Nisha Kumra, Mrs. Anju Rajput, Ms. Rupinder Kaur and Mr. Mastaan also graced the ocassion. Mrs. Manisha Sethi concluded the event with her heart-touching words on place and value of parents in our life. The event left a powerful impact on the minds of the students while making them highly emotional. 







Poster Making Activity on “Maat Pita Santaan Diwas”

"Maat Pita Santaan Diwas" is one of the most important functions of Dev Samaj College for Women,Ferozepur City. Since its inception,the day is celebrated every year with great zeal and enthusiasm. The purpose of this day is to pay tributes to the hard work and sacrifices of the devoted parents who provide guidance ,support and unconditional love to their children.
The Post Graduate Department of English celebrated 'Maat Pita Santaan Diwas' on January 24, 2019. Mrs. Manisha Sethi (H.O.D) presented her views on  the role and importance of parents in one's life. The students of  B.VOCI expressed their gratitude towards their parents with the help of Posters, showing various gracious moments of love ,affection and their childhood memories. Mrs. Nisha Kumra, Dr. Bhumida, Mrs. Anupriya, Mr. Mastaan and Mr. Deepak also graced the occasion. Mrs. Manisha Sethi appreciated the efforts of all and congratulated everybody for making the auspicious  day a great success. It was a golden opportunity for the students to show their love, affection and gratitude towards their parents. The occasion also provided a platform to the students to  pay tribute to their parents who have sacfriced many things in their life and dedicated their time in nurturing them.

WORKSHOP on “Power Point Presentation”

A two days workshop on “Power Point Presentation”was organized by the English Department under the guidance of Miss Rupinderjit Kaur ,Assistant Professor in English from 22.02.2019 to 23.02.2019.The students of B.sc.(Medical,Non-Medical,Comp.Sci.) actively participated in the workshop by giving their presentations on different topics with the help of laptop . Miss Rupinderjit Kaur gave a brief lecture on the importance of modern technical modes in  the process of communication she also highlighted the importance of“Power Point Presentation”.This brief discussion was followed by the presentation of Ajaypal Kaur from Bsc.Medical who discussed her topic “Importance of Technology in Health Science” with the help of a PPT.  The participants were given knowledge about the topic with the help of visual slides. Her detailed presentation was followed by a brief discussion among the students about the positive and negative aspects of technology in health science. On the second day of the workshop , Sophia from B.sc (Non-Medical) spoke about the procedure of making a PPT. She discussed each and every step minutely so as the students can make the slides on their own. At the end of her presentation, she also satisfied the queries of the concerned students. The workshop ended in a positive note and the objective of the activity was duly achieved.







WORKSHOP ON CORRECTION OF SENTENCES
A one day workshop was conducted by the Department of English for the students of B.A I in the ICT room. Mrs. Anju Rajput (Asstt. Prof. in Eng) gave an overview of the importance of usage of correct English in writing as well as speaking..in order to elaborate one’s thoughts on the paper. After a general interaction with the students, the selected group of students took the charge of writing sentences and then discussing its correction with the whole class.The correction pattern included the correction in the usage of Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs.Various worksheets were downloaded and solved on the smart board only making the students computer friendly. A healthy discussion made the workshop a lively occasion for the students to learn, understand and practice various forms of corrections. The students were able to locate the error and replace it with the correct form of speech.The smart class concept has made the Teaching- Learning process very simple and interesting.















                                 “Keats as a writer of Odes”
A seminar on “Keats as a writer of Odes” was organised by the Department of English for the students of  M.A.I on 02.11.2018. The aim was to discuss with the students different aspects of Keats’ odes and how the odes are constructed with harmonious skill.Ms. Deepti Jose in her paper presentation pointed out how Keats’ odes are marked by sensuousness, love of beauty, negative capability, pictorial quality and love for nature.Ms. Mehal came with view that Keats’ odes are also the product of certain inner struggles or conflicts. They also imply the opposition between pleasure and pain, imagination and reason, permanence and change, art and life , waking and dream. Mrs. Manisha concluded that Keats is undoubtedly a great writer of odes with the foremost quality of unity of impression in all the odes. Mrs. Nisha acknowledged the efforts of the students for their participation in this seminar.






                  FAIZ AS A PROGRESSIVE WRITER

A discussion on “Faiz as a progressive writer” was conducted for the students of M.A. IInd English. Faiz is one of the great lyricists who sung of love with great passion. He was a political thinker and liberal humanist. But he was more revolutionary than romantic. Miss Gagandeep came forward with the view that the struggle against poverty and the fight against capitalism, political and social exploitation gave Faiz’s poetry a sense of direction. He was a rebel and revolutionary at heart. He always directly attacked dictatorship, imperialism and hypocrisy. Miss Priyanka added that Faiz was a subtle artist who expressed his revolutionary ideas in metaphors and similes with great felicity for symbols and imagery. Mrs. Manisha concluded that in the beginning Faiz wrote some romantic poetry but very soon his tone changed and his revolutionary poetry began to be revered everywhere. Mrs. Nisha pointed out how Faiz is becoming the voice of the marginalized and other poor and oppressed sections of society. All the participants with one voice agreed that Faiz is becoming more relevant with each passing day and here lies the greatness of   Faiz Ahmed Faiz.





                           WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION


International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The department of English celebrated Women’s Day on 8th March in the premises of the college. The focus of celebration ranged from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s empowerment and their achievements.  Under the guidance of Mrs. Anupriya, the students of B.A-II celebrated the day with  full vigour. They recited poems and shared their views on women’s role and their status in the society. The students also discussed about the evils of female foeticide, dowry system etc.




















Power Point Presentation on Whitman’s Poetry

Power point Presentation was organised by the Department of English.  Mrs. Anupriya  started the presentation with a quote:
           To have great poets there must be great audience too
Walt Whitman is often considered to be larger than life poet, writing expansive lines and embracing the whole of America as his inspiration. It is said that through him, the voices of many speak. Whitman is known as a poet of commons. He talks about democracy, nature, commoners, spirituality etc. Walt Whitman is included in the syllabus of M.A-II in American Literature.  The students of Post Graduation presented their ppts on different topics related to the poet. The students discussed Song of Myself: the most popular poem. The students discussed different quotes of his poetry and relate it to the realities of life. Mrs. Anu Priya summed up the session by quoting famous lines and elaborating the themes of the poetry:
I celebrate myself; and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.





                    Group discussion on Robert Frost’S Poetry



Many of Robert Frost’s poems contain the vital ingredient of ‘nature’. Frost used nature as a metaphor in his poems to express the intentions in his poems. He used nature as a background. He usually begins a poem with an observation of something in nature and then moves towards a connection to some human connection. Group discussion was held in the premises of DSCW by Mrs. Anupriya from the Department of English on the topic “ The Poetic art  and vision of Robert Frost with the focus on his pragmatic view of the relationship between man and nature.”                     
The students of Post Graduation Ms.Sonam and Ms. Jashanjot highlighted the metaphorical quality of the poetry of Frost by reading out the concerned lines. Other participants enthusiastically discussed various points by falling into a lively and healthy discussion. Many other related topics were also discussed and elaborated with different point of views. The objective of the discussion was truly met with.




































CLEANLINESS DRIVE IN COLLABORATION WITH N.S.S


On February 23,2019, the students and the Teachers of Department of English,Dev Samaj College For Women, Ferozepur City, organized a cleanliness drive under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.All the students along with the teachers, assembled in the lawn of the college at 10.a.m.The students were made aware about the cleanliness and its benefits. All the students from various departments participated in this event in an enthusiastic manner. Dr.(Mrs)Madhu Prashar, Principal,DSCW, delivered an impressive speech to encourage the students to understand the importance of sanitation in their daily life . The student ,thus motivated , cleaned the college ground as well as the class rooms. The students enthusiastically picked up all the scattered wrappers, papers and tit-bits to make the drive meaningful. A few students even made posters to be pasted in the corridors and in the classrooms just, as a gentle reminder for all.. At the end of the event, the participants took an oath to keep their surroundings neat and clean.











PPT PRESENTATION ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS



The Department of English organized  PPT Presentations on the topic 'Communication Skills ' with the students of B.Com1. Dr. Bhumida Sharma introduced the Topic with a lively discussion with the class. She highlighted the importance of good communication skills in today’s scenario citing various examples from daily life where communication plays a pivotal role in making ane’  The students, in their presentations, dealt with the following topics: Business Communication, Non-verbal Communication, Body Language and Interview Skills.Ms. ------ presented her ideas on Body Language and demonstrated as to how to be confident in front of the panel.Ms. -----------discussed about various Interview Skills required for the jobs.  The students demonstrated their slides very enthusiastically. The session was quite interactive and involving.

The presentors discussed the Do's and Don'ts of Business Communication and role of gestures and body language during interviews. The students found the presentations very informative and beneficial.
